"He seemed well" Rona said. "Which is good. I'm glad he's well. If he is. But he seemed well."

"Uh-huh." Miranda had decided that if Rona had a headache it was probably best not to pepper her with too many questions; and then when Rona had started talking, unbidden, about her encounter with Matt that day, she realised that perhaps what Rona most wanted to do was talk about him, about their break-up, about everything. They'd never really talked about any of it. So she shut her mouth and let Rona talk.

"It was unfair of me, really" Rona continued. "I mean I haven't talked to him at all since we broke up. And not because, like, I've been avoiding him, just because I haven't. You know? I haven't needed to. There was no drive to talk to him. Which I mean was the whole problem in the first place. And then the first time I do talk to him since the break-up, the first time I even just try to get in touch with him, it's to ask a favour. Which isn't fair really, is it?"

"I don't know" Miranda said. "Maybe it is, maybe it isn't."

"But he didn't seem upset about it. He didn't seem offended. I mean he didn't even have to come, but he did, he didn't even ask any questions, didn't try to talk about any personal stuff or anything. And it's not like he knows Brent all that well. He wasn't under any obligation. But he came anyway. You know?"

"He's a nice guy" Miranda reasoned.

"Yeah." Rona stared at her glass of water. It was empty again: she'd drunk two glasses now since coming home. Miranda wondered if it had had any effect on her headache. She wondered if all this talking was just Rona trying to distract herself from her headache. "But - this is horrible of me to think, god, I know - but, what if he's trying to get back together with me? I mean, what if he's being so nice, so . . . obedient - what if it's just him trying to get back in my good books? Is that something guys do?"

Miranda was only half paying attention: her mind had suddenly turned towards Will, Will who she hadn't heard from at all since he'd gone back to the U.K. Will who even with so many means of communication available to a person today had maintained his silence. Slowly she came around to answering Rona's question: "But if he was going to try to get back together with you he would've been calling you and texting you and emailing you constantly, trying for it, wouldn't he? And he hasn't, has he? I mean he hasn't got in touch with you even once since the break-up, has he?"

"No" Rona agreed. She couldn't exactly say why she felt so disconsolate at Miranda's words. "He hasn't, even once."
