"What the fuck are we gonna do?"

"We're gonna call a locksmith."

"But I don't know the number for any locksmiths! Do you?"

"No. That's why I'm gonna call directory enquiries first."

"But what if I need to go to the toilet!"

"Hannah, calm down." Sacha tightened her mouth and stared at Hannah. Sometimes she felt as if the lenses of her glasses gave her a protective distance from the world. Some time in the last couple of minutes Hannah had switched, perhaps she'd only just realised that they were locked out of the house, and now she was starting to panic. It wasn't helpful. Sacha was tempted to wonder whether it had been just cigar Hannah had been smoking.

"How long will it take a locksmith to get here?" Hannah asked, her voice pushing towards high and tremulous.

"Not long" Sacha promised. How did Hannah expect her to know? But she decided that pointing that out wouldn't help.

"I'm cold."

"You're fine. Hannah, chill out, okay? You'll be fine. Look, I think I can remember the number for directory enquiries, okay? I'm gonna call a locksmith, and we'll be back inside in time for . . ." She wished, just at that moment, that she could remember the name of a T.V. show that Hannah liked watching. "We'll be fine" she said. Suddenly she remembered that Hannah had taken a bottle of vodka out of the freezer before she'd decided to come out for a smoke. "We'll be back inside before the vodka even warms up" Sacha promised. Though given how cold their kitchen got in winter, that wasn't really saying much.
