Sacha was in the bathroom of her
flat when she heard her 'phone ringing. She didn't want to rush;
she let it ring. It rang and rang, and the longer it went the more
Sacha determined that she wasn't going to hurry out of the bathroom
just to answer it - even though, by the time it finished, she probably
could have. She sighed, and decided stubbornly not to wonder who
had called, when she heard her mobile ringing. Whoever was calling,
they were clearly persistent; but unlike the land-line, the mobile
rang only a handful of times before being diverted to the voice-mail,
giving Sacha no time to get out of the bathroom and answer it. However,
when she eventually did emerge from the bathroom there was a new
text message on her mobile informing her that she'd missed a call
and received a voice-message. She picked the mobile up and dialled
the short number to access the voice-message:
"Hi Sacha, it's Kate. Just
calling to let you know I've just arrived in Melbourne. So I'm at
the airport now. So, umm . . . I guess I catch the Skybus into the
city, but after that I don't really know how to get to your place.
Give me a call when you get this. Okay, talk to you soon!"
Sacha hung up and then dialled Kate's
number. Again, there was a lot of ringing; and again the 'phone
that was ringing went unanswered, being diverted to Kate's message
service. Sacha sighed, thought briefly about whether or not she
should leave a message, eventually settled for a functional: "It's
Sacha", then hung up.
Moments later her mobile rang, buzzing
in her hand. She looked at the display: it said, predictable, 'Kate'.
"Hi Kate" Sacha said as
she picked up.
"Hiya, mate! Sorry I just missed
your call, I was in the middle of getting my bag off the conveyer
belt thing. How are you?"
"I'm good. You?"
"Also!"
"How was the flight?"
"Ehh." Kate exhaled. "Short.
Tiring. It's weird."
"It's all the waiting."
"Yeah, I think that's it. Anyway
-"
"Right, you need to know how
to get here, right?"
"Yep."
"Okay. So when you get off
the Skybus in the city you need to turn south -"
"Is that left or right?"
"Kate, Melbourne's the easiest
city in the world to know north and south in!"
"Maybe for you."
"Fine. It's right. You turn
right out of the bus station. Then you walk to Collins Street -"
"How far's that?"
"A few blocks."
"A few blocks? With
all my luggage?"
"It's not that far!"
"Ugh, screw it. I'll get a
taxi instead. What's your address again?"
