Sacha put the C.D.
on. Suddenly Rona rushed out of the room. Already Hannah had started
complaining:
"Rona, this
song sucks!"
"Hang on, hang
on, I'm not ready yet" shouted Rona from the next room. Shortly
she came back with a notepad and a pen. "Okay, anyone else?"
"I think it's
kinda cool" said Mal.
"Yeah, you
can't dance to it though" pointed out Alain.
"Cool, cool,
keep it coming" said Rona, hurriedly writing everything they
said down into the notepad. "Brent, what about you?"
"Mmm . . .
It's got a certain groove to it, I guess. It's catchy, in a grabbing
you in a headlock and slamming your face against the wall kind of
a way . . ."
" . . . But?"
"Well"
said Brent, waving his hands around thoughtfully. "Bottom line
is, why should I listed to it when I could just as easily go down
the shop and buy a C.D. by Talking Heads or Television, or someone
like that? I mean, it's just rehashing, I'm better off listening
to the original."
"Okay, cool.
Hannah?"
"Still sucks,
baby."
"Sure. Why?"
"Well it's
just cock rock, isn't it?"
"Actually"
said Mal, "I think you'll find this is more New Wave than Cock
Rock."
"I'm not talking
about genres" said Hannah. "It's just guitars and angst.
Boys and their toys. I could have more fun ignoring drunk guys at
an R.S.L."
"Okay"
said Rona, writing this down. "So that's 1 thumb up and 3 thumbs
down. Sacha?"
Sacha cocked her
head to listen as the chorus came 'round for a third time. "Hmm
. . ." She wetted her lips. "Frankly, I'm indifferent
to it. I could take it or leave it."
"Oh, come on!"
Everyone else in the room cried out at her, putting her down good-naturedly.
"You can't just sit on the fence!" exclaimed Rona.
"Okay, okay!"
Sacha put her hands up to quiet the others. "Fine. Well if
I'm going to be pressed for an opinion, I'd have to say . . . Well,
I'll put it like this: I'd be sadder to see it continue, than I
would be to see it finish."
Hannah grinned,
and surreptitiously gave her a thumbs up. Then Hannah turned to
Rona: "What about you then, Dangermouse? You've got the deciding
vote. You're writing the review, after all."
"Yeah, come
on Rona" said Brent.
"Well"
said Rona, "I'm going to have to go with Hannah on this one.
It's more for the boys."
"Ooohhh!" Alain cooed mockingly like he was back in primary
school. "Sticking together again, you two? Lovely, lovely."
Rona gave him the
finger. Suddenly the song stopped. "Oh, Christ" she said.
"B-side! Quick, who wants pizza?"
