After having breakfast
and tucking Hannah into her bed, Rona picked up the 'phone and dialled
Sacha's number.
"Hello?"
"Hi, Sacha.
It's Rona."
"Oh, hi Rona."
"What're you
up to?"
Sacha sighed. "Just
looking through yesterday's job ads."
"Anything there?"
"Not really."
Rona heard Sacha turn a page of newspaper. "So what can I do
for you?"
"Well I'm going
into Richmond this arvo, wondered if you wanted to come? If you
don't have any plans, that is."
"I dunno .
. . I'm feeling kind of tired, I don't really feel like doing anything.
"So what, you're
just gonna mope around in your flat then? It's the weekend, for
god's sake!"
"I'm not moping
around, I just . . . I just don't feel like it, that's all."
"Oh, come on!"
teased Rona. "You're so fucking antisocial!"
Sacha bristled on
the other end of the line. "I'm not antisocial" she said
carefully, "I'm non-social. There's a difference."
"Whatever.
Either way, seems to me you end up sitting around being grumpy all
day, instead of going out and doing anything."
"Oh fine, fine,
if it'll shut you up. Christ, you're as bad as my sister."
"Woo-hoo!"
giggled Rona. "What's the time - 11:30, okay. You had breakfast
yet?"
"What do you
think I am, some kind of slob?"
"Okay, okay,
calm down. So, how about I swing by your place 'bout one o'clock?"
"Yeah, whatever."
"Cool."
Rona got a pen and paper. "So, what's the address again?"
Sacha paused. "On
second thoughts, don't come 'round here. My place is a shitbox.
How about I meet you somewhere instead?"
"Yeah okay.
You know Victoria Parade? The tram terminal there?"
"Yeah."
"Meet me there.
We'll get a tram up into Richmond."
"Fine. See
you at one." Sacha put the 'phone down before Rona could engage
her in casual conversation. She looked around her flat and tried
to fight off the feeling of despondency that had been gnawing at
her for weeks now. She counted out her change, to make sure that
she could afford a tram ticket. Somehow she just didn't feel like
going out and doing anything - but then, at the same time, she knew
that she just had to get out of that flat.
