Episode 709 - 30 May 2008

Eric and Mal heard footsteps coming up the driveway, and a moment later they heard the front door opening and Eric's mum greeting Steve. Then Steve came into the rehearsal room and clapped his hands together.

"Sorted!" he announced. "Smooth sailing now boys, everything's taken care of at the Point, I've given them the names for the door-list and that's no problem, all we gotta do now is turn up and play! Hey, what's up?"

"Eric's moving to Queensland!" Mal said.

"Mal wants us to have a plan."

"Whoa, guys, what? One at a time, guys."

Eric looked at Mal. "I'm not moving there. I'm just going on holiday."

"Right after the gig! Why?"

"Listen, let's . . ." Steve scratched his ear. "That's his business, Mal. What's this about a plan?"

"A uniform plan" Mal said.

"Unifying" Eric corrected him under his breath.

"To make it" Mal said, obviously still stuck in his slightly gnomic frame of mind from earlier.

"That's probably not a bad idea" Steve nodded, "but I'll have to figure out what you mean, first. Now, Eric - moving, or holiday?"

"Holiday" Eric insisted. "And why shouldn't I? You can't say I'm not committed to the band, don't accuse me of that!"

"Whoa, chill out man!" Steve said blissfully. "No-one's accusing you."

"I just want a bit of a break" Eric explained.

"From the band?"

"From Melbourne, man. Just a few weeks. I'll come back, then we'll play all the gigs that are coming to us after the Point. It'll be cool, man. We can't plan for the future. We can't sit around on hold just in case something happens. Let's just play this gig, get back to our lives, then if the next gig happens it happens. All right?"

Steve shrugged. To be honest he'd been negotiating with the venue manager for long enough this afternoon, and he was over trying to sort things out for today. "Let's just play the gig" he agreed, and he and Eric both looked at Mal.

Mal put his hand in the middle even though nobody else had, and grinned. Gig!" he giggled. It didn't matter how many times he heard it, that word always cracked him up.
