Episode 919 - 30 June 2009

On Sunday Will walked up to Rona and Miranda's house with a rucksack over one shoulder and a flimsy, rolled-up mattress over the other, and that was it, he was moved in. Rona followed him to his room to see if he somehow needed any help with anything, and watched in amazement as one trinket after another came out of the top of his pack, one memento after another. "Souvenirs" he told her in his accent which, Rona had to admit, she quite liked. "All the back-packer clichés" he explained, putting a photo of himself and several other young, sun-burned people on the one short shelf with which his room was furnished. "That was fruit-picking in the Riverina" he explained. "Last summer."

"All the back-packer clichés, and you haven't even been to Sydney yet!" Rona teased him.

"Coming soon" Will grinned.

He looked around the room as if imagining all the furniture he could put in it, if only he had some. "Over there, I think" he declared, pointing to a corner of the room near a power-point. He dragged the mattress over there, turned it over and unfurled it. "This way, or that way?" he wondered, tilting his head to indicate the imagined angle of the mattress.

"Um" Rona said, unsure if he was talking to her or just to himself.

"That way" he decided, and turned the mattress around ninety degrees.

"Um do you want a hand with that . . .?" Rona asked, but by the time she did so he'd already finished.

"There's no wardrobe in here" Rona said apologetically.

"That's okay, I don't really need one" Will said. He pulled a handful of clothes from his rucksack, on coat-hangers, and hung them from the door-handle. "That'll do" he said happily.

He examined the room carefully, spinning around on the spot like a dog circling a favourite patch of carpet. "Yeah, this'll work well" he said under his breath.

Miranda popped her head around the door. She'd hardly been able to contain her excitement about him moving in. "You all settled?" she asked.

"Yeah, it's all good my darling" Will smiled.

"Drinks in the kitchen" Miranda declared, and disappeared again.
