"I don't think we should tell anyone about this" Sacha said when they finally got back inside the house.

"Why not?"

"Because it's embarrassing!"

"It's funny" Hannah said. She was just happy to be back inside. "It's a funny story. I can't wait to tell Shelly."

"It's not" Sacha insisted, because she knew how much the locksmith had charged them. One-hundred and eighty dollars. "Because sometimes people just call up for a joke" the locksmith had explained, and Sacha felt like asking who these people were, so that she could go and get her money back from them. She'd have to break the bad news to Hannah: she figured they were at least equally to blame for getting locked out, neither of them had thought to prop the door open or take their keys with them.

Ninety dollars each. Ninety dollars wasn't a disaster but it was ninety dollars that Sacha would rather have still in the bank. She was trying to save money and it seemed like every time she tried the city or the universe or whatever came back and snapped it away from her. It seemed as if for every dollar she tried to save she was lucky to get away with fifty cents. It'd be nice to go on holiday, or go to a nice restaurant for dinner, or go and see a play or something, it'd be nice to really start using this city the way it was meant to be used, but then she went and did something stupid like get herself locked out of the house after hours in the middle of winter and there went all her plans.

"God, I'm freezing" Hannah complained. "I'm gonna go turn the heater on."
