Hannah got dressed while Sacha and
Janine consumed their tea free of conversation. When Hannah re-emerged,
hair stilly slightly damp but otherwise ready to face the day (despite
the fact that it was by now well into the afternoon), Janine leapt
up from her seat happily, paying no heed to the cup of tea which
she almost spilled all over the floor in her haste. "Ready
to go?" she beamed.
"Go where?" Hannah asked
cautiously. This was the first time she'd seen Janine since their
argument.
"I dunno, I thought we could
go out. Somewhere not here" she added pointedly. She
somehow avoided the temptation to scowl at Sacha, though she hardly
needed to make her meaning any clearer.
"Tell you what" said Hannah,
"Why don't you go down to the Cinch and get us a table. One
by the window, in the sun. You know how crowded it can get. I'll
join you in ten minutes." Janine looked at her suspiciously.
"I've just got a few things to take care of before I get going"
Hannah explained. "A bit of washing up, that kind of stuff.
Fifteen minutes, then I'll join you." As an afterthought, she
kissed Janine. "Promise" she said.
"Okay" Janine replied
warily. "No longer than twenty minutes, though! I'm not waiting!"
"Don't worry honey, I'll be
there." Hannah knew Janine would wait: she always did.
As soon as Janine had left Hannah
turned to Sacha, her demeanour entirely changed. "What the
fuck was that all about?" she asked, jabbing her thumb
towards the front door through which Janine had just exited.
"I've got no idea" replied
Sacha honestly. "She just turned up here. She thinks I'm trying
to steal you away from her."
Hannah opened her mouth to make
a cheeky comment - "If only!" or something like that -
but remembered how uncomfortable Sacha had got the last time, so
she settled for: "Really?"
"Really. That's what she said."
"Oh, was that what the shouting
was about?"
"Uh-huh."
Hannah shook her head. "I haven't
even seen her for weeks. Not since before you moved in. To
be honest I didn't even know if we were still together."
"Well" Sacha shrugged,
"looks like you are. Better not keep her waiting."
Hannah frowned. "That washing
up's looking good." But nonetheless, she said goodbye to Sacha
and headed back to her room in preparation for leaving the house,
and soon she was out the front door and on her way to joining Janine.
