"I was thinking of
going back home for Easter" Sacha told Hannah when they passed
in the corridor one afternoon.
"When's Easter again?"
Hannah asked.
"This weekend."
"Oh. Shit! I figured
it must be soon. You know, Easter eggs and all that."
"I guess you don't
have any particular plans for Easter?" Sacha asked.
"What, apart from
the four-day weekend? That's gonna be pretty sweet."
"Other than drinking,
I meant."
Hannah shook her head,
and smiled wryly. "It's not a big holiday in the Jewish calendar"
she said. "Have you booked your tickets yet? You going by 'plane?"
"Yeah. No, not yet."
"You'd wanna get on
that. They'll fill up!"
"People'll mainly
be going in the other direction" Sacha replied. "People
tend to leave Canberra at Easter, rather than go there."
"I can see that."
"Careful!"
"I'm just saying .
. ."
"You were raised in
Melbourne. You wouldn't understand."
"Understand what?"
Hannah cocked her head.
"Being from another
place. Being homesick about it. Melbourne's great, and it's easy
to live in - damn easy - but it doesn't stop you getting homesick."
"Well, I was
raised in Elsternwick . . ."
"So?"
"So now I'm in Brunswick."
"It's just the other
side of the river!"
"Hey, it's a thing,
all the same."
"Yeah." Sacha
scratched her arm. "I can never figure that out."
"Have you ever even
been to St. Kilda, since you came here?"
Sacha shook her head without
saying anything. Hannah had her there.
"Well look who's talking
now, Miss 'It's-only-a-river'!" she teased Sacha. Then her
demeanour changed. "I can't believe you've never been to St.
Kilda, Sash, I've gotta take you there some time."
"Is it that good?"
Hannah shrugged. "It's
all right."
