"It looked like rain. I invited
her inside so she wouldn't get caught in it."
If the previous weekend Hannah had
stayed at home, letting Sacha live the high life, this weekend she'd
made up for it. Sacha had come into the kitchen on Sunday morning
to make a cup of tea and read the left-overs from Saturday's papers,
and had found the door of the fridge open and a young woman crouching
behind it, wearing only a long t-shirt and, Sacha had supposed,
underwear underneath - though now she thought back to it, that actually
seemed unlikely. "Is this milk still good?" the woman
had asked her.
"So you were out - where?"
Sacha asked Hannah on Sunday evening, once the woman - Lexy - had
finally left. (It's short for 'Alexandra'" Hannah had explained
to Sacha. "You'd change it, too.")
"I was out in the city"
Hannah replied. "It's the only place where the bars are open
long enough. You know, to make it really worthwhile."
"So you were out in the city"
Sacha repeated, "and you thought it was going to rain, so you
decided to take shelter here?"
"It would've been rude to let
her get wet" Hannah said.
"Hannah, it's a twenty minute
tram-ride from the city to here!"
"It's only ten minutes by taxi"
Hannah pointed out helpfully. "Actually, no, it was longer
than that, because we had to find one. You know there are no taxis
in the city at night? It's insane!"
"Listen, Hannah" Sacha
said. "I don't mind that you brought someone home last
night. You don't have to make up excuses why. You can have a fuck
on a Saturday night, that's fine, whatever. It's hardly even any
of my business! But there's one thing that annoys me."
"What's that?"
"Next time she's over, can
you tell her please not to use my tea and my milk
and my tea-pot?"
"Oh, she won't be around again"
Hannah smiled.
"She won't?"
"Nah. Just a one-night stand.
Well, lie-down. Well, no, there was some standing." Hannah
grinned at the memory. "Well, she was standing. At first."
