"Hey, I've got some big news!"
Mal told Rona later that night.
"What is it?" Rona asked
eagerly. There was something about Mal's constant enthusiasm about
everything that she found catching.
"We've got a gig!" Mal
answered.
Rona couldn't help feeling a little
disappointed - after all, Mal and Eric and Steve had played plenty
of gigs before. But she didn't want to be the one to bring Mal down.
"Well that's great!" she said. But she couldn't help herself:
"But . . . What's so special about a gig?"
"Well we haven't had one in
ages" Mal pointed out.
"That's true."
"Plus . . ."
"Plus what?"
Rona thought she heard Mal suppressing
a giggle on the other end of the line. The corners of her mouth
rose in anticipation. "Plus it's at the Point!" Mal exclaimed
triumphantly.
"What? Mal, that's amazing!
How did you get a gig there? When is it? When do the tickets go
on sale?"
"It's gonna be the biggest
gig we've ever played" Mal said. "I'm a little bit nervous!
I haven't been nervous before a gig for ages. And it's still weeks
away!"
"But - how?"
"Steve organised it. He's got
a friend, or something."
"Fuck me. Oh, Mal, I wish I
was there to give you a big hug! We have to go out and celebrate."
"No!" Mal said. "Me
and the guys have to practice. Practice, practice. Real hard. From
now 'til the end of the month."
"Is that when it is?"
"Yeah. Oh shit Rona, can you
imagine if it sold out!" Wouldn't that be wild!"
"Do you think it will?"
Rona asked in amazement.
"Nah" Mal said, instantly
dismissing the fantasy. "But . . . Imagine if it did!"
