"And what about that guy on
the dance-floor!"
Those were the first words Sacha
heard when she returned from work on Friday, still feeling a little
dusty after having only got about four hours sleep the night before
- and most of that drunk, judging by the dreams she'd had. Hannah
and Shelly, not surprisingly, hadn't been up when she'd left for
work in the morning, and by the sounds of it now Shelly was still
here. Sacha walked into the sitting-room to find what she'd expected
to find: Shelly and Hannah delightedly re-enacting the dance-moves
of a particular guy they'd seen the previous night. Their synchronisation
was out: they were laughing too hard. A mostly-empty bottle of wine
was on the table in front of them, but Sacha couldn't see any glasses.
"Oh my god, Sacha" Hannah
said, when Sacha entered the room. She was still laughing uncontrollably
between words. "Do you remember that guy? Last night?"
"I remember" Sacha nodded,
smiling wryly like a young teacher watching over exuberant children.
"Have some wine!" Hannah
said. "We're too drunk to finish it."
"I'd was gonna make myself
some tea, actually" Sacha replied.
"Wine!" Hannah insisted.
"Hey . . ." Shelly tapped
Hannah eagerly on the arm. "What d'you think tea would taste
like with wine in it?" Hannah and Sacha both looked at her
in astonishment. "I'm gonna try it" Shelly said.
Five minutes later, a little reluctantly,
Sacha was pouring Shelly a cup of tea. Shelly duly poured a slug
of wine into the cup, and tentatively sipped it. Hannah and Sacha
watched eagerly for the verdict. "I think I'm gonna puke"
Shelly said. But she didn't, and she finished the cup with time.
"Sacha, you gotta finish the
wine now" Hannah said, eyeing what little was left in the bottle.
"I'm worried what she's gonna do with it next."
"Coffee!" Shelly demanded.
"You finish it"
Sacha said to Hannah.
Hannah shrugged. "All right."
She took the bottle and necked it, knocking back the remainder of
the wine in one gulp. Suddenly she remembered something. "And
the elbows!" she declared loudly. "He was waving his elbows
up around his ears!" And again she started mimicking the dancing
style of the man from the night before, and Shelly joined in and
they were both cackling again. Sacha looked at the two of them through
the steam rising off the top of her tea, trying to make sense of
them. Eventually, watching them and also thinking back to the man
last night, she shook her head, and smiled.
