"How was the movie?" Sacha
called out when she heard the front door open. "Is Shelly with
you?"
"Good and yes" Hannah
called back, and Sacha heard a second set of footsteps coming into
the house behind Hannah's. She heard giggling, too.
"Either of you two wanna cup
of tea?" Sacha called as she carried the kettle to the kitchen
tap.
"Every time I come here, Sacha"
Shelly called out, still unseen in the hallway, "you're always
in the kitchen."
"You're such a housewife"
Hannah added, laughing.
"I've been in at the office
all day" Sacha called back indignantly. "I'm filling the
kettle up. So do either of you want a cup of tea?"
"Yes please."
"No thanks."
Sacha released a quick blast of
water into the kettle. She heard someone walking towards the kitchen,
and when she turned around Shelly was leaning in the doorway. She
had make-up on, and a long black clinging dress. Must've been a
real, proper date, then, Sacha supposed. "You look nice"
she muttered.
"Thanks, Sash." Sacha
winced a little at Shelly using her nickname - a nickname which,
until Hannah had started using it, had never been spoken by anyone
other than her sister. "You have a good night?" Shelly
asked.
"Quiet" Sacha replied.
"Did a bit of reading. Listened to the wind."
"Oh." Shelly frowned in
amusement. "Sounds exciting."
"Where's my coat?" Hannah
shouted from the hallway.
"I did some cleaning up"
Sacha called back, raising her voice a little as the kettle came
to the boil. "I put it on the chair in your room."
"I kinda wish you wouldn't
move my stuff."
"It was in the way." The
kettle reached a crescendo, then clicked itself off. Sacha turned
to Shelly, holding the kettle in one hand and a mug with a teabag
in the other. "Milk?"
