"So we're really going on holiday,
then!" Matt said excitedly.
Rona absorbed this, and then beamed.
"I guess we are!"
"Just for a weekend" Matt
pointed out, reminding them both lest the excitement should go to
their heads. "But you can do plenty in a weekend" he added
happily.
"And it'll be the first time
we've gone away together" Rona said.
"I know!" Matt agreed.
He remembered having told her that the night before, but he refrained
from pointing this out.
"Where're we gonna go?"
Rona asked.
"Oh."
"Is your car working?"
"Sort of."
"What's 'sort of'?"
"We better not drive interstate."
"Well we couldn't in a weekend
anyway."
"Bit of a shame. I've heard
the South Coast of New South Wales is gorgeous" Matt said.
"I like the Central Coast"
Rona replied wistfully, remembering high-school holidays to Gosford,
weekend trips up the train-line with her friends to Newcastle.
"Next time, maybe" Matt
said, searching in his mind for T.V. images he'd seen of New South
Wales' far South Coast. "We need to plan for this time, though!"
he said. "We'll need to book a hotel."
"How can we book a hotel if
we don't know where we're going?" Rona pointed out.
"I thought we could go along
the Great Ocean Road. Drive to a town out there somewhere, stay
the night, come back."
"I've never been along there!"
Rona said in wonder. How had she never been along there? In all
her time living in Melbourne, how had she never gone along the Great
Ocean Road? "Is it nice?"
"It's great" Matt said
eagerly. "I went there five or six years ago with my girlfriend
back then -"
Rona turned to him.
"Um, is that weird?" Matt
said apologetically, suddenly wishing he hadn't been quite so excited
about the trip, that he could've reined it in enough to think about
his words before he spoke them.
"No!" Rona said quickly.
"No. It's not weird. Why would it be weird? If you say the
Great Ocean Road's nice, it's nice. Let's go."
