"It's kind of exciting"
Miranda said. "I mean if you didn't even know that you had
all those copies of the magazine in there. It makes you wonder what
else might be in all these boxes."
"It makes me scared to look"
Rona joked.
"We should've done this ages
ago."
"If we did everything ages
ago that we should've done ages ago, we'd have nothing to
do now."
Miranda blinked. "I guess so."
"But I hope my zines are in
here" Rona said. "I wonder if they are?"
"Which ones?"
"My ones!"
"You mean ones you've collected?"
"No!" Rona laughed, amazed
that Miranda didn't realise what she was talking about. "I
mean old copies of the one I did when I lived in Sydney. Remember?"
"Oh, shit yeah!" Miranda
enthused. "I remember you didn't want me to read it."
"Well it is a bit embarrassing."
"I'd still love to read them
all" Miranda said, fudging the issue: she didn't want to give
away to Rona that she'd had a look at them behind her back, last
time Rona had mentioned it so long ago.
"I'd have to find them first.
I know I had them all in a box somewhere."
"Get looking, then!" Miranda
said, passing her a box.
Rona looked at her like she was
deranged, a half-smile curling the edge of her mouth, and shook
her head. "It's really not as exciting as you think it is."
"I'll be the judge of that"
Miranda said. She knew that Rona was lying: she knew that Rona must
be excited about it herself, or she wouldn't have brought it up.
She knew Rona must be thinking about writing again: that old itch
resurfacing; and that made Miranda excited on her behalf.
"If -"
"If you find them, I know,
I know" Miranda interrupted.
"I was going to say"
Rona said patiently, "if I let you read them."
"This time" Miranda said
teasingly. "Well maybe I'll find them first. Maybe I'll find
them and I won't tell you. Then you won't be able to do anything
about it!"
"Well if you do find them and
read them," Rona said earnestly, "tell me honestly if
you think they're any good, will you? Okay?"
